New park for Beltline calls for artist submissions
The new Beltline park is calling for some unconventional art submissions from artists. The city is seeking an individual or team of artists to develop a large scale permanent installation plan that will be incorporated into several areas of the new park, located at 12th Avenue and 9th Street S.W.

Community consultations from 2007 have identified a need for a centralized park that will accommodate active and passive user activities, provide beautified green space, include compelling public art installations and be easy to navigate even at night.

In order to meet the artistic needs of residents, the city has called for artists to help revamp several components in the park in the form of gardens, seating, and permanent statues or sentinels.  The art is to encompass all users of the park in an engaging experience that will promote a sense of discovery in the space

With an all-inclusive budget of $370,000 for the public art portion, local, national and international artists with experience in outdoor mediums are asked to submit a portfolio of their accomplishments and current works. The new Beltline park is slated to be completed in 2013, with construction starting in spring of 2012.  It will span one-third of a city block.  The entire project is slated to cost upwards of $3 million.

The call for submissions closed on June 14, the City of Calgary and other community members will review the submissions in July and make decision as to who will be involved with the project.
